Ptosis is a condition in which the upper eyelid droops lower than normal. It may affect one eye or both eyes. In mild cases, ptosis mainly affects appearance. In severe cases, the drooping eyelid may partially or completely cover the pupil and interfere with vision.
Ptosis can be present at birth or develop later in life.
The upper eyelid is lifted by a muscle called the levator muscle. When this muscle becomes weak, stretched, or does not work properly, the eyelid droops, causing ptosis.
Treatment depends on the cause and severity of ptosis.
