It started with a simple observation: homebuyers in Ahmedabad wanted more than four walls. They wanted to belong somewhere. They wanted their children to have space to move through. They wanted neighbours who became friends, and mornings that didn't feel like the beginning of a commute.

G.M. Patel had spent his career in manufacturing — a world of precision tolerances and unforgiving quality standards. When he moved into real estate in 1993, he brought all of that with him. His earliest addresses weren't Ahmedabad's flashiest. They were its most structurally honest homes that held their value, their form, and their communities across decades while neighbouring developments began, quietly, to fail.

Today, Suryam is run by a second generation that grew up inside that legacy. What was inherited was the rigour. What was added was a global design education, an international network of specialists, and a particular impatience with how Indian luxury real estate had settled for less than it could be.

Since 1993, Suryam has belonged to the second category ‚bringing together ecologists, water engineers, botanists, and international architects around each project before a single wall is drawn, then asking a question most developers never think to ask: what does this land want to become?

The answer has taken different forms across three decades. Nature communities of 150 acres. A private waterfront estate arranged around a living, engineered lake. Courtyard villas in a forest clearing. An urban address that has quietly renewed one of Ahmedabad's most storied neighbourhoods. But the method has never changed: start with the land, follow its lead, and build something that the site itself would have asked for.

When I started Suryam in 1993, I made one promise to every family that trusted us with one of the most significant decisions of their lives: I will give you more than you expect.
