Revival Room

The Bengal revival or Bengal School, an influential art movement, originated in the early twentieth century, primarily in Calcutta and Santiniketan. Closely associated with Indian nationalism, it was influenced by the ideas of Rabindranath, Abanindranath and Gaganendranath Tagore. Their work was carried forward by their students and artist friends, including Nandalal Bose, Mukul Dey, M.A.R Chughtai, Venkatappa, Surendra Nath Ganguly, Asit Kumar Haldar and others. This section includes portraits by Mukul Dey, mythological themes and Indian literature explored by Nandalal Bose and others and also postcards sent by the students to their masters. This section also explores the landscapes and early cubist studies of Gaganendranath Tagore, who was a nephew to Rabindranath. His landscapes explores mountains executed in a Japanese style with transparent ink and watercolor washes on paper while his cubist studies explores abstract visuals and cityscapes through a theatrical distribution of light and shadow in various shapes.
