Problem Description
Background
Social media has become a powerful platform for communication, activism, and influence. However, it is also frequently exploited for spreading misinformation, radicalization, hoax threats, cyberbullying, and coordinated campaigns that can lead to real-world consequences. Law enforcement agencies and analysts often struggle to track and act upon real-time information scattered across multiple platforms and languages.
Problem Statement
There is a growing need for a robust social media monitoring system that can automatically scan public content across platforms like X (formerly Twitter), Facebook, Instagram, Telegram, and YouTube, and help identify potential threats, viral misinformation, fake news, or emerging social trends that may need intervention.
Key Objectives
Build a Social Media Monitoring Tool that can:
1.Collect real-time or near real-time public posts/comments from multiple platforms using APIs or scraping.
2. Identify and highlight posts containing keywords related to threats, hoaxes, hate speech, or illegal activities.
3. Provide analytics such as:
- Top trending keywords and hashtags
- Geo-tagging of posts where available
- Sentiment analysis
- Network mapping of influencer/viral spread
- Keyword search through open and closed / private profiles
4. Allow filtering by language, location, keyword, and sentiment.
5. Display the results on a user-friendly dashboard with visualization tools.
6. Generate real-time alerts and incident summary reports.
Functional Requirements
- A functional prototype with a working UI dashboard.
- Real or sample dataset demonstration of threat detection.
- Documentation outlining platform coverage, detection methods, and risk scoring models.
- Optional: Integration with multilingual NLP models for better analysis.
Evaluation Criteria
- Accuracy of content classification and alerts
- Ability to handle large data volume in real-time
- Quality of visualizations and insights
- Ease of use for analysts or investigators
- Innovation in detection techniques or risk scoring
Deliverables
The tool can empower authorities, researchers, and crisis response teams to identify potential threats and prevent real-world incidents by monitoring harmful or trending content in real-time. It will also assist in debunking misinformation and understanding public sentiment during emergencies or events.
